Why were they saints?

Years ago (wow, I can say that. . .I must be getting old!) when The General was in Catholic School, the principal had this saying on the bottom of a parent newsletter. I read it, and promptly cut it out and placed it on my refrigerator. It has had a prominent home there ever since. It needed to be placed in a spot that I easily see, and so can remind myself of how I SHOULD behave.

Why were they saints?
Because they were cheerful when it was difficult to be cheerful;
Patient when it was difficult to be patient;
Because they pushed on when they wanted to stand still;
Kept silent when they wanted to talk;
And were agreeable when they wanted to be disagreeable.
That was all.
It was quite simple and always will be.
(Mary Costello)

So this is my hope, to live up to these wise words. I'm telling you, it isn't easy. . .especially the keeping silent part! ;)

Do you have a saying, a special verse, or words of wisdom that are motivating? If so, please share, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would benefit.

  1. I do. The prayer of St Francis of Assisi and the poem If by Kipling. Those are my words to live by. Yours are very good as well. :)

  2. "this too shall pass" from my daddy:) It's so true. When things look tough and really impossible... a year from now they will seem like nothing and you'll be in the middle of your newest "impossible" :) I loved yours! I read the keep silent and thought, "Oh, that one would be the one for me.. and the hardest..." And then you said it!

  3. Phil. 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
    I'm with Tessa on the "this too shall pass" Mark Lawry says it'll pass your you'll pass! Some times you feel like that when your waiting for the storm to pass.

  4. Brenda, I've missed you. Glad to have you back. Yes, I love the prayer of St. Francis. It is one of my favorite hymns. . .if only I could be THAT good.
    Tessa, oh, that one has gotten me through so many hard times.
    Jody, I love that verse.
    I think I will print out these things and frame them for our school room. We are starting school next week, and we can all use some motivational words.
    Thanks again ladies for sharing.

  5. Yeah, Tami... Mom is right. That IS her favorite one. I think I heard that every day of my life... sometimes twice! So, as I was reading your post, I thought "I'll bet mom put 'whatsoever things'..."
